Upper Mustang Trek

Discover the Hidden Gems of the Upper Mustang Trek

The Upper Mustang trek offers a unique Himalayan experience, unlike any other in Nepal. Instead of the usual lush valleys and verdant forests, you’ll find yourself trekking through canyons, high cliffs, and sandy deserts. This offbeat adventure will introduce you to a rich cultural heritage and a sense of stepping back in time. The Upper Mustang trek is truly a journey of a lifetime.

A Region Shrouded in Mystery

Upper Mustang was once forbidden to outsiders, making it a region steeped in mysteries, myths, and legends. The locals maintain a simple lifestyle, largely untouched by modern influences. As you trek through this area, you’ll feel as if you’re traveling back in time. The terrain, climate, culture, and traditions are heavily influenced by neighboring Tibet.

A Challenging Yet Rewarding Trek

While the Upper Mustang trek isn’t overly demanding, it will test your strength and endurance. Unlike the well-known EBC, ABC, or Annapurna Circuit, this trek is a true adventure in a rainshadow area. If you’re seeking a unique journey in Nepal and are willing to push yourself, the 17-day Upper Mustang trek is highly recommended.

What to Expect

Your trek begins and ends with scenic drives to/from Kathmandu, Nepal’s capital. Spend a full day in Kathmandu to prepare for the trek and visit tourist sites. The trek starts in Kagbeni, where you’ll trek through narrow alleys and pass by white-washed houses.

As you move from village to village, the landscapes become increasingly dry and sandy, with barren hills, rice paddies, meadows, and stone/mud houses. Along the way, you’ll see Nilgiri (7,061 m), Annapurna (8,091 m), Dhaulagiri (8,167 m), and other peaks. The surreal landscapes are a highlight of the trek.

Lo Manthang (3,840 m/12,598 ft) is the main attraction of the Upper Mustang trek. This walled city, surrounded by mani walls, is the capital of Mustang. Visit ancient monasteries like Namgyal Gompa, Tall Champa Lhakhang, Red Thugchen Gompa, Chyodi Gompa, the King’s Palace, and the Entrance Hall.

You’ll also explore the infamous sky caves, believed to be man-made and still partially undiscovered. The trek ends in Muktinath, a pilgrimage site in Nepal. From there, you’ll drive to Pokhara and spend a night before returning to Kathmandu.

Who Can Trek Upper Mustang?

Upper Mustang is unique among Nepal’s trekking regions. Trekking here requires certain conditions. You must trek with a guide and in a group of at least two, organized by a registered local trekking company like ours.

Though the altitude gain is minimal, the terrain is challenging and involves crossing several passes. A moderate level of fitness and endurance is necessary. Beginners can join if well-prepared. If you have health conditions that may be affected by high altitude, consult your doctor and inform us. Trekkers of all ages are welcome on the Upper Mustang trek from 2024 to 2025.

How to Prepare

To prepare for the Upper Mustang trek, focus on strength, stamina, endurance, and mental composure. Train for 2 to 3 months before the trek. Engage in activities like running, cycling, hiking, swimming, stair climbing, and walking. Start with light exercises and gradually increase intensity.
