Overview:

The Gokyo Lakes, located in the Himalayas, are renowned for their stunning beauty. On the Gokyo Lake trek, you have the opportunity to explore the pristine corners of the Khumbu region and enjoy tranquil trails. These lakes provide an exciting trekking adventure and serve as an alternative to the famous Everest Base Camp trek.

Similar to other treks in the Khumbu region of Nepal, the 15-day Gokyo Lake trek commences with a flight to Lukla. From Lukla, you follow the usual route to Namche Bazaar. Beyond Namche, the route branches off to the Gokyo Valley, which is separate from the main EBC trail, ensuring a less crowded experience.

*You have the option to upgrade the commercial Lukla flight to a helicopter flight from Kathmandu to Lukla and vice versa.

The trek to Gokyo Lakes features offbeat and steep trails, making it challenging but achievable with proper preparation and support from our experienced guides and porters. This adventure trek involves daily walks of 5-6 hours, so participants need to be fit. Additionally, prior trekking experience is beneficial as it familiarizes you with high altitudes and their associated challenges.

If you wish to join the Gokyo Lake trek departing in 2025, book your trek now. We offer multiple departure dates in the upcoming autumn season (September, October, and November). You can choose between a group or private trek. Feel free to contact us for any assistance.

Why do the Gokyo Lakes trek in Nepal?

The Gokyo Lake trek route provides some of the most spectacular views of Mount Everest and other eight-thousanders. Starting from Lukla, you walk through rhododendron forests along the Dudh Koshi River. The trail then ascends through steep, rocky paths above the tree line, bringing you close to Nepal’s largest glacier, the Ngozumpa Glacier.

You cross the Ngozumpa glacier moraine and pass the first and second Gokyo Lakes to reach Gokyo village. There are a total of 19 Gokyo Lakes, with six main lakes situated between 4,700 and 5,000 meters. The Gokyo village is located near the third Gokyo Lake, known as Dudh Pokhari, which is also the largest Gokyo Lake.

As you progress on the trek, the landscape transitions from the lushness of the Sagarmatha National Park to a more desolate terrain, offering a diverse panorama. The turquoise Gokyo Lakes, surrounded by snow-capped mountains, create a truly heavenly scenery. Every suspension bridge and major point along the trail is adorned with colorful prayer flags.

Some of the notable mountains you will see during the Gokyo Lake trek include Everest (8,849 m), Kanchenjunga (8,586 m), Lhotse (8,516 m), Makalu (8,463 m), Cho Oyu (8,188 m), Nuptse (7,861 m), Ama Dablam (6,812 m), Thamserku (6,608 m), Pumori (7,161 m), Cholatse (6,440 m), and more. The mountain vistas from the Gokyo Ri viewpoint, the highest point of the trek, are truly breathtaking.

Meet Sherpas and other mountain communities:

During this 15-day trek in the Khumbu region, you will stay in picturesque mountain villages. The Sherpas are one of the well-known communities along the Gokyo Lake trek route. However, you will also encounter other ethnic groups such as Rai, Bhotiya, Lama, Limbu, etc. Generally, the locals are very welcoming and friendly.

Most of them can communicate in English due to regular tourist visits. You will have the opportunity to observe their lifestyle and culture. Experience the simple mountain life and enjoy the tranquility of nature. You will spend nights in Phakding, Namche Bazaar, Dole, Machhermo, Gokyo Village, Khumjung Village, Monjo, and Lukla.

Who can do the Gokyo Lake trek?

The Gokyo Lake trek is suitable for travelers with decent physical and mental fitness. As it is a high-altitude trek in the remote Himalayas, participants must be comfortable with the changing environment, thin air, and limited facilities. While previous trekking experience is not mandatory, it is highly recommended.

If you are a first-time trekker, consider going on a few day hikes to ensure your body is prepared for the challenges of the Himalayan trail. Itinerary:

Trip information about Kathmandu to Lukla to Kathmandu flight:

The Everest trek includes a flight from Kathmandu to Lukla. Sometimes, due to bad weather in Lukla, the flight may be delayed or canceled. You should be prepared for this possibility. The weather in Lukla is unpredictable.

We recommend having a few extra days after the trek in case of flight delays or cancellations. If you have a tight schedule, it may be difficult to manage your return flight. Even though the Gokyo Lake Trek is 15 days long, we suggest having 2 to 3 extra days. If the flight is delayed for 2 to 3 days, we will divert you to the Annapurna Base Camp Trek and arrange a flight from Kathmandu to Pokhara for your benefit.

We also recommend having an extra budget for a helicopter charter to return from Lukla to Kathmandu. The helicopter cost is approximately 3500 USD for a charter flight, which comes to around 500 USD per person. You can pay us by cash or credit card.

Trip booking information:

Please send your flight details for arrival at the Kathmandu airport and a passport photocopy via email. You may deposit 25% of the trip advance money in our bank account. The remaining amount can be paid upon your arrival in Kathmandu before the trekking departure.
