What to Expect on the Annapurna Base Camp and Mardi Himal Trek
This 10-day trek introduces you to the dramatic landscapes and unique culture of the Annapurna region. You’ll witness the transition from lush forests to alpine meadows. Starting from Pokhara, you’ll drive to Kimche and begin your trek to Annapurna Base Camp via Ghundruk, Sinuwa, and Deurali. After reaching Annapurna Base Camp, you’ll descend and detour to Mardi Himal, enjoying the peace and tranquility of this hidden gem. On the ninth day, you’ll trek to Mardi Himal before descending back to Pokhara.
Who Can Do the ABC and Mardi Himal Trek?
This moderately challenging trek is suitable for travelers with a basic level of physical fitness. If you can walk 5-7 hours a day on rugged terrain, you can enjoy a memorable trekking experience. While rigorous training isn’t necessary, light hikes or workouts can help prepare for the journey. The trek reaches a maximum altitude of 4500 meters, so take precautions to avoid altitude sickness. Stay hydrated, walk at a steady pace, and avoid alcohol. Consult your doctor if you have pre-existing medical conditions. Pack essentials like trekking boots, layered clothing, a sturdy backpack, trekking poles, sunscreen, and water purification tablets.
Altitude Sickness Precautions
The risk of altitude sickness increases as you gain elevation. This trek reaches a maximum altitude of 4500 meters, so be aware of symptoms like headache, vomiting, nausea, dizziness, and difficulty breathing. Inform your guide immediately if you experience any symptoms. Altitude sickness can be managed with rest and medication, but in severe cases, descending to a lower altitude or helicopter evacuation may be necessary.
Itinerary
Your Annapurna Base Camp and Mardi Himal trek begins with a scenic drive from Pokhara to Kimche by private taxi. Along the way, you'll pass through charming villages like Nayapul, Birethanti, and Syauli Bazar. From Kimche, start your hike towards Ghandruk, enjoying stunning views of the Annapurna range, Hiunchuli, and Macchapuchhure as you trek alongside the Modi Khola River. Upon reaching Ghandruk, immerse yourself in the warm hospitality of the local Gurung community. Savor local delicacies and unwind for the night.
After a filling breakfast in Ghandruk, head towards Sinuwa. The trail descends through Chhomrong Danda and then ascends to Komrong Khola. Continue the gradual climb to Chhomrong and eventually reach Sinuwa after 5-6 hours of trekking. Sinuwa offers breathtaking views of snow-capped peaks. Spend the night in a cozy teahouse/lodge.
Today's trek takes you through the heart of the Annapurna Sanctuary, passing through dense bamboo and rhododendron forests. Travel across Bamboo, Dovan (2505 meters), and Himalaya (2920 meters) along rocky Himalayan terrain before reaching Deurali. The day's trek is strenuous but rewarding, lasting 6 to 7 hours. Spend the night in Deurali, surrounded by lush forests.
Today, you'll reach your first major destination—Annapurna Base Camp. Trek via Macchapuchhure Base Camp, considered the final push before ABC. The trek to ABC takes approximately 4 to 5 hours. Upon arrival, relax at your resthouse and explore the area. Take some time to enjoy the incredible sunset.
Wake up early at Annapurna Base Camp to witness the magnificent sunrise, followed by breakfast at your teahouse. Today's trek is a long descent to Bamboo, taking about 6 to 7 hours. Enjoy the beautiful views of the Annapurna range, Hiunchuli, Machhapuchhure, Tharpu Chuli, Singhu Chuli, and other peaks.
The trek from Bamboo to Jhinu Danda takes about 5 hours. Pass through lush rhododendron and bamboo forests. The journey is mostly comfortable, though there is a steep descent to Jhinu Danda after reaching Chhomrung. In Jhinu Danda, relax in the hot springs to soothe your muscles and enjoy their therapeutic benefits.
From Jhinu Danda, take a detour towards Mardi Himal. Trek through serene paths lined with dense rhododendron, oak, and bamboo forests. As you gain altitude, enjoy breathtaking views of Machhapuchhure and Annapurna South before reaching Forest Camp. Spend the night in a cozy teahouse at Forest Camp.
Today, follow rugged paths through alpine meadows to reach High Camp. The trek gradually ascends, offering stunning views of icy peaks. After a 5 to 6-hour hike, arrive at High Camp, your final rest stop before Mardi Himal Base Camp. Here, you'll be rewarded with mesmerizing views of Machhapuchhure and the Annapurna range, along with a breathtaking sunset.
Wake up early and embark on a thrilling ascent to Mardi Himal Base Camp. Enjoy an incredible sunrise view over the Annapurna, Macchapuchhure, and Hiunchuli panorama. Afterward, begin a steep descent to Low Camp through rhododendron forests. Spend the night in a teahouse at Low Camp.
On the final day, descend from Low Camp to Kande, passing through dense rhododendron forests and charming villages. After reaching Kande, enjoy a 45-minute scenic drive back to Pokhara (820m), where you can relax by Phewa Lake. Spend a leisurely evening in Pokhara, reminiscing about the magical memories created during the 10-day Annapurna Base Camp and Mardi Himal Trek.
